Cyprus Government Advances Mental Health Legislation

Accra:The government is working on two new bills aimed at enhancing the mental health framework in the country. These bills are considered urgent by Patient's Advocate, Marios Charalambides, who highlighted their importance in a statement coinciding with World Mental Health Day.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the first bill proposes amendments to current legislation on psychiatric hospitalization. It outlines the conditions for voluntary and involuntary hospitalization, details the role of mental health professionals in patient transport and admission, and ensures independent reviews of hospitalization decisions. It also guarantees that patients are fully informed of their rights and have the option for representation.

The second bill focuses on community-based mental health care, establishing a structure for services outside of hospital environments. This framework aims to create a comprehensive network of community services, including specialized support for children, adolescents, and vulnerable groups, while formalizing the operation of community-based facilities.

Charalambides emphasized the need for collective commitment and ongoing dialogue with those affected by mental health issues. He stressed the importance of upholding the dignity of individuals with mental health challenges, noting the persistent issues of stigma and social exclusion they face as significant societal challenges.
