Larnaca: The geopolitical upgrade of the Republic of Cyprus and its geographical position have created a new environment of respect for the country, Minister of Defence Vassilis Palmas announced during the NEMESIS 2025 exercise.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas made these remarks at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, where the Multinational Exercise “NEMESIS 2025” took place within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus. The Minister praised the Center and the participating countries for their involvement in the exercise, which was initially launched in 2014.
Palmas emphasized the importance of synergies, collaborations, and alliances between member states of the international community to effectively carry out various missions, including humanitarian, peaceful, and warlike operations. He highlighted the Center’s longstanding role in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions as a key component of the Ministry of Defence and the National Guard.
Addressing the NEMESIS 2025 exercise, the Minister stated that Cyprus is making every effort to improve and upgrade emergency response procedures, focusing on emergencies such as terrorist attacks, Search and Rescue operations, and marine pollution incidents within its EEZ. Palmas underscored the need for continuous pursuit of maritime safety and the importance of exercises like NEMESIS 2025 in enhancing capabilities and updating procedures.
The Minister also noted the responsibilities that come with exploitation activities in the EEZ and assured that Cyprus is committed to fulfilling them. Through initiatives like NEMESIS, Cyprus is actively pursuing cooperation and coordination among all involved parties, both public and private, based on international law and European Union Directives.
The exercise saw participation from Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Palmas expressed gratitude for their support, emphasizing its importance for regional stability, benefit, and prosperity.
