Nicosia: Preparations for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU are intensifying at all levels, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna said in her statements after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. She noted that December is a milestone month for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, which starts in January 2026.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna emphasized that the preparations are gaining momentum as Cyprus approaches the start of its presidency. December will see the presentation of the joint Priority Programme of the Trio Presidency, which includes Cyprus, Poland, and Denmark. This programme will cover the ten months from January 2025 to June 2026.
Raouna also mentioned that a special presentation and briefing for Ministers and Deputy Ministers on the European Parliament was conducted by the Head of the Department for Relations with the European Parliament at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus in Brussels. This briefing is in preparation for Cyprus’s upcoming r
ole in the EU legislative process and its responsibilities during the presidency.
She further explained that during the Cyprus Presidency, Cabinet members will not only chair the EU Council’s Ministerial meetings but also represent the Council before the European Parliament. The 18-month Priority Programme of Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus is set to be presented and adopted at the General Affairs Council on 17 December. This will be followed by the publication of the programme, aligning with the start of the Polish Presidency on 1 January 2025.
