Nicosia: Cyprus' Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas participated in the informal meeting of the EU Defence Ministers, held in Wicklow, Ireland, on Tuesday. Discussions at the meeting concentrated on EU military assistance to Ukraine, the role of the EU's space capabilities in fortifying European security and defence, and developments in the Middle East.
According to Cyprus News Agency, during the first part of the Council meeting, Defence Ministers deliberated on the ongoing European Union support for Ukraine amid the latest battlefield developments. The primary focus was on EU military assistance to Ukraine, collaboration within the defence industry, the future trajectory of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine), and the European Union's potential contribution to future security guarantees for the country.
As the meeting progressed, ministers examined how the European Union's space capabilities could enhance European security and defence. Discussions centered around protecting space infrastructure, the development of secure and resilient space capabilities, and optimizing European space programmes and services to tackle modern security challenges.
In the concluding segment of the meeting, the ministers reflected on developments in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the situation in Lebanon and the potential deployment of an EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) mission. Additionally, maritime security issues were discussed, emphasizing the protection of critical maritime infrastructure and enhancing the security of maritime lines of communication.
