Cyprus Commemorates First President Archbishop Makarios with Annual Memorial

Nicosia: The annual memorial service for the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, was held on Sunday at the Monastery of Kykkos. The service was presided over by Archbishop Georgios and attended by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Dr. Athena Michaelidou, delivered a memorial speech highlighting the enduring legacy of Archbishop Makarios. She emphasized that his vision of a free and prosperous Cyprus serves as a guiding light for current and future generations. Dr. Michaelidou reiterated the nation’s commitment to pursuing justice and liberation for Cyprus, advocating for unity and dedication to national duty amid ongoing Turkish occupation.

Dr. Michaelidou also noted the government’s focus on education reform, which aims to foster a school system that embodies values championed by Makarios, such as unity, inclusion, excellence, national consciousness, and respect for individuals.

Following the church service, a prayer was held at the Throni of Panagia, near the Kykkos Monastery, where Archbishop Makarios is interred. Wreaths were then laid at his statue at Throni.

The memorial was attended by heads and representatives from political parties, the Cyprus Police, the National Guard, the Hellenic Force in Cyprus, Greece’s Embassy, members of Makarios’ family, and various community and organized group representatives.
