Nicosia: The Ministry of Defence is engaging in studies and discussions with the United States and the European Union to upgrade and modernize the ‘Andreas Papandreou’ air base in Paphos and the ‘Evangelos Florakis’ naval base in Mari, Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas stated to CNA. This comes in response to a report in ‘Phileleftheros’ newspaper.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Defence Minister highlighted that the announcement regarding the upgrade and modernization of both bases was made some time ago. Palmas emphasized that these projects are pivotal in enhancing Cyprus’s strategic role in the region, especially considering recent developments such as the crisis in Gaza, the crisis in Lebanon, and various evacuations and humanitarian missions.
Palmas noted that ongoing discussions with the European Union and the United States are focused on collaborative efforts for these bases, with the US concentrating on the Andreas Papandreou Air Base and the EU on the Mari naval base. US officials have already visited the air base twice to provide recommendations, while consultations with European counterparts concerning the Mari project are underway. The naval base upgrade is anticipated to be completed in two to three years, whereas the air base modernization is expected to conclude in one and a half to two years.
The Minister reiterated that both bases remain assets of Cypriot interest and ownership, despite international cooperation. He assured that ownership would not be transferred to foreign entities. The bases will continue to support Cyprus’s allies with training, information exchange, and broader missions, including evacuations from nearby crisis zones.
Palmas highlighted Cyprus’s strategic location as the easternmost EU member, which enhances its role as the Mediterranean representative in Europe. He underscored the necessity of fully modernizing the two bases to align with international demands.
