Cyprus-China Trade and Investment Expanding, Says Keravnos at Chinese Ambassador’s Farewell

Nicosia: Finance Minister Makis Keravnos expressed his appreciation on Wednesday for China’s support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus at the farewell ceremony for Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Liu Yantao. He also said that bilateral relations are developing, while trade and investment between the two countries are expanding.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Keravnos highlighted the significance of China’s position on the Cyprus issue, particularly its role as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, in backing Cyprus’ efforts to resume negotiations for a viable and lasting settlement based on the agreed UN framework. He delivered these remarks during a speech at a Nicosia hotel event.

He further acknowledged that although much remains to be done to ensure lasting peace worldwide, both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Cyprus support and uphold the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

The Finance Minister expressed confidence that in the coming years, the Republic of Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China will consolidate their cooperation, elevating their partnership to greater heights. He noted that the bilateral relations have been growing rapidly, with expanding trade and investment creating new opportunities for businesses and jobs.

Additionally, Keravnos praised Ambassador Liu’s efforts during his tenure in Cyprus, noting that he worked tirelessly to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, laying strong foundations for the future. He emphasized the value of the constructive dialogue maintained between the two nations from the perspective of the Ministry of Finance.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have yet to yield results, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ending inconclusively.
