Cyprus Announces New Financial Instrument for Primary Sector

Agros:Cyprus: The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment in Cyprus is advancing with the establishment of a Financial Instrument to support the primary sector, facilitating access to finance and promoting sustainable investments, as stated by Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a broad consultation with the agricultural community is set to begin on October 8 regarding the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) beyond 2027. Women living and working in rural areas will be invited to participate in this process.

At an event in Agros focusing on the role of women in rural areas, Minister Senekis emphasized the importance of transforming women's knowledge and experience into greater opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and development in these areas. He highlighted that this is not only about gender equality but also essential for keeping rural areas vibrant and productive.

The Minister also discussed the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan for 2023-2027, which has a total budget of £454 million. It supports investments, the modernization of agricultural holdings, and encourages young people to engage in the primary sector. Over 1,200 applications were submitted under a recent Major Investment Measure, requesting nearly £200 million, while 267 applications were received for the First Installation of Young Farmers scheme.

Senekis noted that the strong response indicates a willingness to renew and invest in the primary sector despite challenges. The Ministry aims to support this momentum, ensuring that new opportunities are accessible to women who wish to advance in rural entrepreneurship or agricultural management.

He also highlighted the LEADER scheme as a crucial tool for supporting mountainous and rural communities. This program backs local community initiatives, fostering new businesses, jobs, and small-scale projects. It awards additional points for women's participation in activities like agritourism and home-based craft production, thereby boosting female entrepreneurship.

Minister Senekis acknowledged the long-standing yet often unrecognized contribution of women to rural life, from agriculture to livestock farming. Today, women in rural areas are gaining visibility and becoming active in organic farming, product processing, craft production, and agritourism, contributing significantly to new forms of entrepreneurship.
