Cyprus Achieves Significant Drop in Child Poverty Risk

Hanoi:The proportion of children in Cyprus at risk of poverty or social exclusion decreased to 14.0% in 2025 from 22.1% in 2019, as highlighted in a study on the European Child Guarantee's implementation across EU Member States.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus recorded the third-lowest child poverty risk rate among EU Member States in 2025, following Slovenia at 12.5% and the Netherlands at 12.7%. This notable reduction from 22.1% to 14.0% is among the largest improvements observed, alongside Romania and Lithuania. Previously, Cyprus was categorized as having intermediate performance but has now moved closer to countries with the lowest values for this indicator.

The study, titled 'Strengthening the European Child Guarantee an overview of lessons learnt and best practices from the EU Member States', was commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department and Eurofound for the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. It evaluates various aspects such as child poverty, early childhood education and care, early school leaving, unmet healthcare needs, and housing costs.

At the EU level, the study indicates that child poverty remains a significant issue. The overall share of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion slightly increased from 23.7% in 2019 to 24.3% in 2025, although over half of the EU Member States showed improvement.
