Cyprus Achieves Significant Drop in Child Poverty Risk Rate

Hanoi:The risk of child poverty or social exclusion in Cyprus decreased notably, reaching 14.0% in 2025, down from 22.1% in 2019, as revealed by a study assessing the European Child Guarantee across EU Member States.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus recorded the third-lowest child poverty risk rate among EU Member States in 2025, surpassed only by Slovenia at 12.5% and the Netherlands at 12.7%. The reduction from 22.1% to 14.0% was one of the most substantial improvements during this period, alongside significant decreases in Romania and Lithuania. Previously categorized among countries with intermediate performance, Cyprus has moved closer to those with the lowest rates for this indicator.

The study, titled 'Strengthening the European Child Guarantee an overview of lessons learnt and best practices from the EU Member States', was developed by the European Parliament Policy Department and Eurofound, commissioned by the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. It evaluates issues such as child poverty, early childhood education and care, early school leaving, unmet healthcare needs, and housing costs.

At the EU level, the study reports that overall child poverty remains high, with a slight increase in the proportion of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion from 23.7% in 2019 to 24.3% in 2025. Despite this, more than half of the EU Member States have shown improvements.
