Cypriot Presidency Inaugurated with Emphasis on Unity and Independence

Nicosia: In a significant address at the opening ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency, President von der Leyen underscored Cyprus's leadership and commitment to a united and secure Europe. Speaking alongside prominent leaders, von der Leyen highlighted Cyprus's strategic role within the European Union, particularly in delivering humanitarian aid and shaping regional security.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President von der Leyen emphasized the importance of Cyprus's contribution to the EU, especially in the context of Ukraine's security, which she equated to Europe's security. She reiterated the need for a competitive Union to ensure independence and supported Cyprus's efforts in reducing bureaucratic barriers to enhance economic competitiveness.

The Cypriot Presidency is seen as pivotal, given its historical context and strategic location. The promise of reunification remains a key priority for the EU, as highlighted by von der Leyen's appointment of former Commissioner Johannes Hahn as the EU Envoy for Cyprus. The aim is to foster a comprehensive and lasting settlement, with hopes of renewed progress by 2026.

The speech also touched on the philosophical legacy of Cyprus, referencing Zeno of Citium and the principles of Stoicism. Von der Leyen called upon Europe to turn challenges into opportunities, drawing strength from adversity, a sentiment resonating with Cyprus's historical resilience.

In parallel, an extraordinary meeting of EU agriculture ministers was convened to address food security and sovereignty amidst global market volatility. The meeting, integral to the Cypriot Presidency's agenda, underscores the importance of agriculture in maintaining European competitiveness and sovereignty.

The Presidency marks a new chapter for Cyprus within the EU, focusing on unity, security, and economic strength, with aspirations to overcome divisions and enhance regional stability.
