Cypriot MP in Tashkent with OSCE PA mission for electoral process observation

Cypriot MP Kyriakos Hadjiyianni, Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) and Special Representative of the Assembly for South-Eastern Europe, will travel to Tashkent on Wednesday as a member of the OSCE PA mission to monitor the parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan, which will be held on Sunday, October 27.

According to a press release issued by the House of Representatives, the OSCE PA mission will include around sixty parliamentarians from more than twenty-five states which participate in the Organisation, who will be deployed in various cities of Uzbekistan to verify the compliance of the electoral process with the criteria set out in the OSCE Copenhagen Document.

It is added that the members of the mission will have separate meetings with representatives of the electoral authorities, representatives of political parties, parliamentary candidates, as well as with representatives of the media and the civil society. They will also
have a meeting with members of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) long-term election observation mission.

The press release said that the issues that will be addressed by the OSCE PA mission include, inter alia, the electoral legislation, particularly following the recent constitutional and electoral reforms in the country, issues related to the way that the electoral process has been organized and campaign financing.

On the election day, Hadjiyianni will visit polling stations in the city of Samarkand to observe the electoral process on the spot, while during his stay in Tashkent he will have a bilateral meeting with the Head of the OSCE field mission to Uzbekistan, Ambassador Antti Karttunen, the press release concluded.
