New york: Cyprus has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, marking the four-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos, addressed the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing Cyprus' steadfast commitment to Ukraine and the principles of international law.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Damianos highlighted Cyprus' alignment with the European Union in calling for an immediate ceasefire and a comprehensive peace settlement. He urged the Russian Federation to agree to a ceasefire and engage in genuine negotiations, acknowledging the ongoing diplomatic efforts, including the involvement of the United States, to resolve the conflict.
Damianos underscored the importance of justice and legality in any resolution, asserting that borders must not be altered by force. He drew parallels with Cyprus' own history of foreign aggression and occupation, stressing that Cyprus understands the enduring impact of international law violations.
Highlighting Cyprus' role as the current Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Damianos noted the country's prioritization of support for Ukraine through political, financial, humanitarian, and military assistance. He affirmed Cyprus' commitment to Ukraine's recovery, reconstruction, and European aspirations.
Damianos also addressed the UN General Assembly, emphasizing the severe humanitarian crisis in Ukraine due to recent large-scale attacks on critical infrastructure. He reiterated Cyprus' commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and the international order's cornerstone of refraining from force against any state's territorial integrity.
In line with Security Council resolution 2774 (2025) and General Assembly resolution A/RES/ES-11/7, Damianos reaffirmed Cyprus' dedication to achieving a credible and sustainable peace. He stressed the European Union's legitimate role in discussions affecting its security architecture and the inseparability of Ukraine's security from Europe's.
Damianos concluded by emphasizing accountability for serious international law violations and the urgent humanitarian imperative of protecting the rights of Ukrainian children unlawfully transferred or deported. He pledged Cyprus' continued support for a rules-based international order and the sovereignty and security of every state, without exception.
Cyprus has faced its own division since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 ending without agreement.
