Nicosia: Cypriot members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed strong support for the announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the establishment of a European Firefighting Hub in Cyprus. This announcement was part of her State of the Union speech delivered on Wednesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, European People’s Party MEP Loukas Fourlas described the creation of a European Firefighting Base in Cyprus as a significant development. He highlighted the necessity for such a base, which stemmed from the tragic fires in mountainous Limassol. Fourlas emphasized the importance of a permanent European base for firefighting equipment, given Cyprus’s unique geographical challenges, and expressed satisfaction that their calls for support were heeded.
Another European People’s Party MEP, Michalis Hadjipantela, also welcomed the announcement, noting that it would enhance Cyprus’s strategic position in the EU and the Eastern Mediterranean. He stressed the need for tangible actions to address the climate crisis and recalled his advocacy for a more robust rescEU and permanent European response mechanisms.
Socialist-Democratic MEP Costas Mavrides praised the decision as a positive step for the Republic of Cyprus, enhancing its role as a regional support hub. Mavrides noted that the idea had been supported by member states of the Union for the Mediterranean and linked it to his previous proposals for a crisis management center in Cyprus.
The MEP of the Left Group, Giorgos Georgiou, revealed that AKEL had been advocating for a permanent European mechanism to combat natural disasters since 2016. He criticized the delayed response but acknowledged the positive nature of the Commission’s announcement. Georgiou emphasized the importance of planning, prevention, and social investment alongside equipment provision.
MEP for the European Conservatives and Reformists, Geadis Geadi, echoed the positive sentiments, emphasizing the need for effective implementation of the announcement. He called for enhanced coordination among member states, tougher penalties for arsonists, and significant financial support for fire victims. Geadi also highlighted the invaluable role of volunteers in supporting firefighting efforts.
In summary, Cypriot MEPs from various political groups have expressed their approval and optimism regarding the establishment of the European Firefighting Hub in Cyprus, highlighting its potential benefits for the region and calling for effective implementation and additional support measures.
