Nicosia: Savvas Papasavvas has been elected President of the General Court of the European Union by his fellow Judges for the remainder of the presidential term, from 16 September 2026 to 31 August 2028. His election follows the early termination of the term of Marc van der Woude.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Papasavvas was born in 1969 in Nicosia and pursued his legal studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, earning a degree in law in 1991. He furthered his education in France at the Universit© de Paris II, obtaining a postgraduate degree in public law in 1992. His academic journey culminated in a doctorate in law from the Universit© d'Aix-Marseille III in 1995.

Papasavvas has been a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and the Nicosia Bar Association since 1993. He practiced law until his appointment to the General Court in 2004. In addition to his legal practice, he was a teaching fellow and later a lecturer in Constitutional Law at the University of Cyprus between 1997 and 2004.

His judicial career at the General Court began on 12 May 2004. Papasavvas served as President of a Chamber for two consecutive terms from 15 September 2010 to 25 September 2016. He was elected Vice-President of the General Court on 27 September 2019, a role he held until his recent election as President.
