Nicosia: Consultations between Cyprus and Germany have taken place regarding the potential for military assistance to the island. However, it has been confirmed by competent sources that Cyprus' needs are currently being met. This statement came in response to comments by German Government Spokesman, Stefan Cornelius, who indicated that the German Government is not planning to send military support to Cyprus at this time.
According to Cyprus News Agency, discussions between Cyprus and Germany were initiated following the interception of a drone at the British Base of Akrotiri. The consultations were aimed at enhancing Cyprus' deterrent capabilities. It was concluded that Cyprus' needs are sufficiently met through other means and with assistance from other countries. Additionally, it was highlighted that Germany is unable to provide the requested operational support immediately.
The sources further explained that deploying troops outside Germany requires approval from German legislative bodies. Such deployments are typically authorized for NATO or UN Security Council decisions. Meanwhile, it was noted that the Italian Parliament is set to discuss on Thursday the nature of aid it plans to provide to Cyprus.
