Conservation works were completed in the church of Agios Theodoros, in the Turkish-occupied community bearing the same name, as well as in the church of Agios Nikolaos, in Koma tou Gialou, both located in the Karpas peninsula, in the northeastern tip of Cyprus.
In two posts on his personal Facebook account, the Co-chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Sotos Ktoris, announced the completion of works in both churches.
On Friday, he said that work on the church of Agios Theodoros was completed, while on Sunday, in another post, he noted that works at the church of Agios Nikolaos, in Koma tou Gialou were also finished.
Both churches date back to the 15th century. They were restored by a team of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot conservators, engineers and architects.
Both projects were funded by the EU and the communities of Agios Theodoros and Koma tou Gialou, respectively, and were implemented under the supervision of UNDP.
The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage is dedica
ted to the identification and safeguarding of the rich immovable cultural heritage of Cyprus and of all its communities. According to its website, since 2012, with the support of the EU and UNDP, it has restored, conserved, structurally supported or physically protected, including with non-structural small-scale works, over 100 cultural heritage sites across the island.
