Nicosia: A UN diplomatic source in Brussels has informed CNA that concrete outcomes are essential from the visit of UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres to Cyprus scheduled for July 27-29, as well as from the tripartite meeting, to advance the process towards five-party conference talks.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the source dismissed recent press claims about an existing plan, emphasizing that the UN's current focus is on the preparations for Guterres' visit to the island at the end of July and his engagement with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
The source highlighted that the activities of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on the Cyprus issue, Maria Angela Holgun, in both Brussels and Ankara on Friday, are aligned with this strategic framework.
Since 1974, Cyprus has experienced division following Turkey's invasion and subsequent occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace negotiations, a resolution has remained elusive, primarily attributed to Turkish resistance. The most recent negotiations in July 2017, held at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without resolution.
After informal meetings in 2025 and a subsequent pause, efforts are underway for a new, expanded format meeting as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' tenure approaches its conclusion. Mara Angela Holgun, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is actively engaging with involved parties to facilitate progress.
