Nicosia: CARDET, a prominent independent research and development organization in Cyprus, has been appointed as the National Coordinator for the EU Presidency Project (EUPP). This appointment signifies a crucial step forward in Cyprus’s involvement in European civil society and global development initiatives.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the EUPP is a European Commission-funded program that aligns with the Presidency Trio of the Council of the European Union, which includes Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving national NGO platforms such as Grupa Zagranica (Poland), Global Focus (Denmark), and CARDET (Cyprus), working closely with CONCORD Europe, an umbrella organization of NGOs focused on sustainable development and international cooperation.
The project’s primary aim is to amplify the voice and role of civil society in shaping EU development cooperation policies, with a focus on policy coherence, solidarity, and sustainability. As part of this consortium, CARDET will oversee national efforts and foster civil society engagement in Cyprus, leading up to the country’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
In its capacity as National Coordinator, CARDET will take on several responsibilities: facilitating dialogue among stakeholders in Cyprus on EU development priorities, spearheading national initiatives to promote coherent development policies, and supporting joint efforts across the Presidency Trio to enhance the influence of civil society at the EU level. Additionally, CARDET will play a pivotal role in crafting a progressive and inclusive agenda for the 2026 EU Presidency.
As the European Union gears up for future leadership changes, the engagement of civil society is vital in championing an open, equitable, and sustainable Europe on the global stage. CARDET is dedicated to ensuring that Cyprus plays a significant role in this vision by leading national coordination efforts and amplifying local perspectives in the broader European conversation.
