Nicosia: The organisational and legal framework for the creation of the National Cancer Institute has been approved by the Council of Ministers, with a provision of 1.3 million euros allocated in the Ministry of Health budget for 2025.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Minister of Health Michael Damianos expressed that the establishment marks a significant advancement in the nation’s healthcare sector, particularly in cancer prevention. The National Cancer Institute is expected to enhance oncology services across the country by improving coordination among stakeholders, establishing structured guidelines, and supporting the National Cancer Strategy’s implementation.
Damianos highlighted that the proposal for the institute was developed based on a comprehensive study by a specialised consulting firm, under the guidance of the National Cancer Committee. The study considered both the current domestic situation and experiences from international cancer institutes to ensure a robust foundation for the institute’s operations.
The Minister also emphasized the institute’s role in fostering connections with European and international centres, which will bolster cooperation and enable the country to engage more actively in research initiatives and fundraising efforts. The budgetary allocation of 1.3 million euros for 2025 signifies the government’s commitment to this crucial healthcare initiative.
