Nicosia: The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU concluded on Monday the 2nd EU-Moldova Accession Conference with the formal opening of the first cluster of accession negotiations, in what Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna described as "a momentous day for Moldova and for the whole of the European Union."
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna highlighted the significance of opening Cluster 1 of the Fundamentals, marking a milestone in Moldova's European journey. She emphasized the determination, hard work, and aspirations of the Moldovan people behind every reform and legislative change. Raouna recalled her visit to Moldova, noting the resilience and perseverance she witnessed in both Chisinau and the villages.
Raouna acknowledged the hard work leading to this achievement, noting the impressive reform effort Moldova has undertaken amidst challenging circumstances. She emphasized Moldova's commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, the rule of law, and fighting corruption.
Highlighting the importance of the Fundamentals Cluster, Raouna stated that progress in these areas not only strengthens Moldova's path towards EU membership but also builds trust among its citizens in their institutions. She extended her gratitude to President Sandu, public servants, experts, and civil society for their efforts, and thanked the EU member states, the European Commission, and her team at the Permanent Representation.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos echoed the sentiment, calling the cluster opening a major advancement for Moldova's EU accession path. She expressed hope for the opening of the remaining negotiating clusters before summer and praised the Cyprus Presidency for their efforts, acknowledging the skepticism faced initially.
Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Mura?an described the day as "a mega Monday," expressing hope for its historical significance for both Moldova and the European Union. He extended heartfelt thanks to the Cyprus Presidency, recalling the emotions experienced during the Europe Day celebrations with young Moldovans.
