Nicosia: The printing of ballots for the May 24 parliamentary elections is set to commence on May 9, with completion anticipated by May 14, as confirmed by Chief Returning Officer Elikkos Elia to the Cyprus News Agency.
According to Cyprus News Agency, authorities are expediting procedures in light of the approaching elections. Elia mentioned that staffing and training for the polling stations, involving over 16,000 individuals, are currently in progress. A service is planned to be activated before May 15, enabling voters to obtain information about their designated polling stations.
Discussions have already occurred with the government printing office to address various issues related to ballot printing, scheduled to begin once candidacies are submitted. Elia indicated that the largest ballot is expected to be from Nicosia, measuring approximately 67x23 centimeters and printed on both sides. Concerning potential issues due to a recent strike by hourly staff at the printing office, Elia assured that necessary arrangements are being made.
A total of 1,200 polling stations will be operational in Cyprus and abroad for the elections, each capable of accommodating up to 600 voters. Thirteen polling stations are planned for international locations, including five in Athens, three in Thessaloniki, two at the Cyprus Community Center in London, two at the High Commission building in London, and one in Brussels.
Elia noted that 16,103 individuals have shown interest in staffing the stations, with 9,196 being civil servants and 293 unemployed graduates registered with the Department of Labor. Presiding employees will receive a payment of £617.78, while assistant officials will be paid £316.48.
Election results will be announced at the Nicosia Municipal Theater, as the Filoxenia Conference Centre is currently occupied with activities related to the Cyprus EU Presidency councils and other events.
