Athens: Greece, in accord with the Republic of Cyprus, remains committed to finding a comprehensive, mutually acceptable solution, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, with one international personality, one sovereignty and one nationality, in the framework established by the UN Security Council Resolutions, the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek Foreign Ministry stresses that Greece stands with respect to the memory of the fallen, shares the drama of the missing and displaced, and expresses its eternal gratitude to all those who bravely and selflessly defended Cyprus. It also notes that the Cyprus problem remains to this day an international issue of illegal invasion and occupation, constituting an ongoing, daily violation of the United Nations Charter. “The perpetuation of the current status quo, as well as the creation of ‘two states’, are not acceptable solutions,” it says.
At the same time, the Greek Foreign Ministry stresses that thanks to the strong commitment of the UN Secretary General to the Good Offices Mission entrusted to him by the Security Council, the Cyprus problem is high on the UN agenda and adds that Greece stands by the efforts of the UN Secretary General and the President of the Republic of Cyprus for the resumption of the talks.
“The informal meetings in an expanded format, which took place this year in Geneva and New York, show that the conditions can be created to achieve this goal. The resolution of the Cyprus problem, within the parameters set by the UN Security Council, the reunification of the island and the termination of the occupation on the territory of an EU member state, remains the highest national priority,” the statement concludes.
