Nicosia: Action is being taken, particularly at the European level, over violations of the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) by Turkish aircraft, President Nikos Christodoulides said Sunday, adding that the Government stands by air traffic controllers 'to address whatever challenges arise'.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President commented on the reactions by air traffic controllers in both Cyprus and the EU concerning the repeated violations of the Nicosia FIR by Turkish aircraft. He emphasized that 'the air traffic controllers are doing an excellent and highly professional job'.
He elaborated that the Republic of Cyprus 'controls a large FIR, it is a major area control centre', which translates to increased responsibilities for air traffic controllers. Despite the challenges, he noted, they 'always respond professionally', particularly in addressing issues that concern not only Cyprus but also flight safety and many European citizens.
President Christodoulides also mentioned his visit to the new Air Traffic Control Centre, inaugurated last year, acknowledging the 'very good job' being performed there. He reaffirmed the Government's support in helping air traffic controllers tackle any arising challenges.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended inconclusively.
