Limassol: Expressing its sorrow over the deadly wildfire in Limassol district, the 20th Limassol International Documentary Festival will open on August 1st, raising crucial questions about the world we have built and in which we are struggling to survive. A press release by the organisers says that the festival, which will take place from August 1st to 8th, at the Lanitis Carob Mill, ‘mourns together with those affected by the wildfire and the whole of Cyprus for the loss of lives, properties and the immense ecological disaster which took place in our district last week.’
According to Cyprus News Agency, on Friday, August 1st, the festival will begin its screenings, inviting the audience to an essential social and political dialogue, through the art of documentary film. ‘Promoting critical thinking, and contemplating on the pathogens of the system within which nothing seems to be functioning for human dignity and the best interests of our natural environment, the Festival puts forward crucial questions about the world we have built, and in which we strive to survive,’ the press release says.
This year’s screenings begin with a documentary that captures the complex development of reality in the wider region, focusing on the endless struggle for equality between Israel and Palestine. With its caustic humour, it attempts to shed a light on the sense of coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. The screening will begin next Friday at 8:30 PM, with the award-winning documentary ‘Coexistence, My Ass!’, directed by Amber Fares, while its leading lady, comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi, will be present at the screening.
The film, it is added, won numerous awards, including the Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression at this year’s Sundance Festival, the Golden Alexander for Best Documentary and the ‘Human Rights in Motion’ Award at this year’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. It is noted that the screening of the film is supported by PIFF Lemesos Crete (Palestinian Independent Film Festival).
