It is our obligation to give the opportunity to young people to bring about change in important issues, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said in an intervention at a discussion during a Commonwealth event in London.
The Cypriot President, who is in London for the coronation ceremony of the King of the United Kingdom, Charles III, attended on Friday a Commonwealth event, which takes place on the sidelines of the coronation ceremony, following an invitation by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth. The event took place in the presence of King Charles III and the heads of state or government of the Commonwealth countries.
According to a press release issued by the Presidency, the heads of state or government of the Commonwealth member countries participated in a Debate on “The Future of the Commonwealth with a Focus on Youth”.
In his intervention at the discussion, President Christodoulides said that Cyprus has always been an active member, underlining that cooperation on matters of common interest between its members strengthens the promotion and consolidation of peace, security and human rights, especially of young people and women.
He welcomed the Commonwealth Declaration for 2023 which is a year of youth for the Commonwealth, noting that young people can bring change and be an important and valuable investment for the future.
It is our duty, he said, to give the opportunity to young people so that they can bring about change in important matters.
Referring to the importance of the programs for the youth, the President of the Republic noted that their operation must be evaluated and, taking into account the relevant results, they should consider an extension of the programs.
During the event, the President of the Republic held private conversations with heads of state or government of the member countries, including the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who thanked President Christodoulides for the Republic for Cyprus’ assistance as regards the evacuation of British citizens from Sudan. During the event, the President of the Republic also had a short conversation with King Charles III, the press release concludes.
