We have full confidence in Eide, UNSG’s spokesperson says

The UN has full confidence in the UNSGs Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, who is doing a very good job, the UNSGs spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Monday.

Asked, during his regular briefing, about some reports in the Greek media saying the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias has sent a letter to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, accusing the Special Adviser of lobbying for the Turkish side, instead of acting like a UN mediator, and whether he would confirm that the Secretary General has received a letter by the Foreign Minister of Greece, Dujarric said he will check about this.

“I haven’t seen the letter, but we have full confidence in Mr Eide and the fact that he is very much doing his work as a UN Special Advisor and doing a very good job,” he noted.

UN-led peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
