We cannot compromise with the current situation in Cyprus, says Minister of Defence

Minister of DefenceSavvasAngelides said Monday that the Republic of Cyprus cannot compromise with the current state of affairs on theCyprus problem, adding that the current situation is unacceptable, illegal and in no way a solution to the Cyprus problem.

At the same time he called on everyone to show support to the efforts of the Cypriot President NicosAnastasiades to achieve the best for the future.

Speaking at the funeral of Andreas Kyriakou, who died during the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974 and was identified after DNA analysis of his remains, the Minister said that the fallen soldier shows us the way to responsibility and duty towards the reunification of our homeland under conditions of freedom, security, peace and national dignity, away from anachronistic systems of guarantee.

He assured that the President of the Republic is making efforts through dialogue, to achieve a solution that will bring peace, stability, but also safeguard the fundamental European principles and international law. At the same time, he added, a solution should ensure thatthe state can work, is sovereign and independent and belongs to its legitimate inhabitants.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The last round of negotiations, in July 2017, collapsed at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana.
