Wastewater analysis shows low usage of illicit substances in Cyprus

Cyprus presents a low usage of illicit drug substances, says a study on urban wastewater analysis in both the EU and non-EU countries, carried out in April 2020, when lockdown measures were imposed in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a press release issued by the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus National Addictions Authority (CNAA), among the five illicit substances under examination, cocaine usage was quite low among the preferences of Cypriots, amphetamine usage is low, while Nicosia and Limassol are among the cities with the lowest usage of ecstasy (MDMA).

The sampling in Cyprus was carried out by the University of Cyprus’ “Nireas” International Water Research Centre with funding by the CNAA and its results were published in the study of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).
