US reiterates support for a Cyprus settlement in line with UN resolutions

The US supports efforts to reunify Cyprus in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, Matthew Miller, a Spokesperson for the US Department of State has said.

Replying to a question by the Athens News Agency, Miller noted, moreover, that Cyprus is an important partner of the US in efforts to promote regional stability, security and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

‘The United States remains unwavering in its support for the Cypriot-led, UN-facilitated efforts to reunify the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality for the benefit of all Cypriots, as outlined in relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The Republic of Cyprus is an important partner of the US in efforts to promote regional stability, security and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean’ Miller noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
