US Deputy Assistant Secretary Palmer holds meetings in Nicosia

Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US State Department Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Matthew Palmer is paying a visit to Nicosia, where he will meet, among others, on Thursday, with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and with Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.

Palmer is expected to discuss with his interlocutors about the Cyprus problem, energy issues, Cyprus – US bilateral relations, the lifting of the US arms embargo on Cyprus and the issue of the UN peacekeeping operation in Cyprus (UNFICYP), in light of the US position regarding UN peacekeeping operations worldwide.

The US diplomat is also expected to attend a reception hosted on Thursday evening at the US Embassy in Nicosia, on the occasion of the anniversary of the US Independence.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
