UNHCR welcomes UK decision to allow residence for refugees stranded in the British Bases

UNHCR welcomes a UK government decision to grant an indefinite leave for six refugee families who arrived on the British Bases in Cyprus in 1998.

A spokesperson of the office of UNHCR in Cyprus said that following the settlement of the proceedings, the UN Refugee Agency is currently examining with relevant partners how best the refugee families can be supported to integrate in the UK and rebuild their lives that has been in limbo for 20 years.

UNHCR has followed this protracted case closely from the start, advocating for a durable solution for the individuals who found themselves stranded on the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) after fleeing persecution and violence, it is noted.
