UNHCR Cyprus Office marks World’s Refugee Day

The UNHCR Country Office in Cyprus and partners will be marking this year’s World Refugee Day with a series of dedicated events and activities which kicked off today and will continue through to Friday 23 June in Nicosia and Larnaca.

A press release by the UNHCR says that one in every 113 people around the world has been forced to flee their homes because of war or persecution and for this reason it’s vital we demonstrate to world leaders that global public stands #WithRefugees and that concrete solutions must be found to refugee crises.

UNHCR’s #WithRefugees Campaign and petition aims to do just that channel public support and ask for just, humane and innovative solutions for refugees the world over.

On June 20, World Refugee Day we honour the strength, resilience and courage of refugees. When faced with losing their homes, their work, and sometimes their families refugees don’t give up they find a way to start again. Eager to belong- they reach out to their new neighbours, bring smiles, laughter and new opportunities. In fact, bringing refugee and local communities together often brings solutions instead of problems, the press release says.

The events are as follows:

June 12-15: Film Festival

June 18 : Concert by Cyprus Chamber Orchestra

June 20: Book launch with the author Beyond their Eyes

June 21: World Refugee Day Festival, Faneromeni Square, Old Nicosia

June 23: World Refugee Day Festival, Larnaca
