Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations arrives in Cyprus on Wednesday

_: Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, arrives in Cyprus, on Wednesday, from Lebanon, continuing his wider Middle East tour to visit UN Peacekeeping missions.

Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General said Lacroix will meet with government officials, local authorities and community representatives.

During his visit he will also meet with UN peacekeepers, members of the diplomatic community, the Committee on Missing Persons and speak at an event to mark International Women’s Day.

Diplomatic sources had said last week that Lacroix will meet the leaders of the two communities on the island. Despite the fact that the visit is not linked with the SG’s good offices mission, it is almost certain that Lacroix will convey to Antonio Guterres the views of the two leaders on the recent developments on the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

A Conference on Cyprus in the context of UN led talks for the reunification of Cyprus under a federal roof, which took place in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana last summer ended without an agreement.
