United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has sent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades a congratulatory message on his re-election in which he said that he looks forward to his continued cooperation and efforts to resolve the long-standing Cyprus problem, adding that the UN will continue to be supportive of such efforts.

I would like to convey my congratulations and best wishes upon your re-election as President of the Republic of Cyprus,” Guterres message read, according to a presidency press release issued here today.

The UN SG wished President Anastasiades “every success in carrying out your mandate and trust that we will continue to work together to address the many complex global challenges that lie ahead.”

“I look forward to your continued cooperation and efforts to resolve the long-standing Cyprus problem. The United Nations will continue to be supportive of such efforts, Guterres message concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks commenced at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana on June 28, but in the early hours of July 7, it was announced that the Conference on Cyprus ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
