UN SG continues to see what influence the UN can have to bring Cyprus talks forward

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres continues to see what influence the UN can have to bring the Cyprus talks forward, a UN official has said.

Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq, replying to a journalists question as to how much the question of Cyprus is on Guterres agenda this year, said that “he continues to be advised, including from Elizabeth Spehar who is our senior official currently dealing with the Cyprus file about all the events, and he continues to see what influence we can have to bring the talks forward.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated UN-led negotiations have not yet yielded any results to reunite the country under a federal roof. The latest such effort, in July last year, ended inconclusively.
