UN refer to Dujarric’s response on hydrocarbons and drilling operations in Cyprus’ EEZ

Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq referred on Thursday to the answer which the UNSGs spokesperson Stephane Dujarric gave on Monday about drilling operations in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the issue of hydrocarbons, in view of Turkish activities in the Cypriot EEZ.

Asked by a Turkish journalist if the Secretary-General is concerned by the fact that natural resources around Cyprus would benefit only one community but not by the Turkish Cypriots because there is no solution to the Cyprus problem and responding to the journalists remark that the Secretary-General has repeated many times that both communities have the same rights to their natural resources, Haq said “I would just refer to you to what Stephane said about the matter a few days ago. I don’t have anything further to add to that.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Ankara issued a navigational telex, announcing its intention to start drilling off Cyprus until September 3. The Turkish drill ship Fatih is located almost 40 nautical miles west of the Akamas peninsula and 83 nautical miles from the Turkish coast. The area falls within the EEZ and continental shelf of the Republic of Cyprus.
