UN official and Russian Ambassador express their condolences for the passing of former President Christofias

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNFICYP Elizabeth Spehar said that former President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias left an important legacy, while the Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Stanislav Osadchiy that Christofias’ passing was a great loss.

Spehar signed this morning the book of condolences for the former President, at the Presidential Palace. In her statements on behalf of the United Nations and herself personally, she said that they are very sad about the passing of Demetris Christofias. He is someone that, as I wrote in the book, we consider an esteemed leader and a stalwart friend of peace for this island she noted.

She went on to say that she had the chance to work with Christofias directly, starting from when she was interim Special Representative to the Secretary General in Cyprus back in 2008.

We consider that he has a very important legacy that he has left to Cyprus. Unfortunately, he did not see his country reunited in peace, but I think that all of us, all of you and particularly Cypriots need to try to build on his legacy she concluded.

Russian Ambassador Stanislav Osadchiy also signed the book of condolences and said later that the passing of Demetris Christofias is a great loss, both for Cyprus and Russia.

Christofias was a friend of Russia and as a President he enjoyed great support from his people, the Ambassador went on.

He will always stay in our memory, because people like him who are real politicians are worth a lot OSadchiy concluded.
