UN envoy for Cyprus and Greek official to meet in New York

UN envoy Jane Holl Lute will be meeting at UN headquarters, in New York, with Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Katrougalos, on December 12, to discuss inter alia the Cyprus issue.

Katrougalos will be in the United States for the launching of the strategic dialogue between the US and Greece, on December 13, in Washington.

The Greek official will not be meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who will be in Morocco at the time.

Lute originally intended to visit Athens during the first week of December but will not due to heavy schedules on the Greek side. A visit to Ankara has not been set. Diplomatic sources said a similar meeting could have been arranged with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu, who was in New York last week.

The same sources said Lute will be visiting Nicosia after she concludes her meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of guarantor powers Britain, Greece and Turkey.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
