UAE Embassy in Nicosia organises panel discussion on women’s role in climate change mitigation

UAE Embassy in Nicosia has organised a panel discussion with the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus to highlight women’s role in the decision-making process to combat climate change and build a sustainable future.

A press release by the Embassy says that Sultan Ahmed Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, said that the discussion aimed to highlight the UAE’s efforts in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment domestically and regionally.

He noted that as the UAE prepares to host the 28th meeting of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Conference of the Parties, or COP28, in 2023, it is working to center women’s issues in the climate agenda and strengthen cooperation with partners as a key priority at COP28.

Melina Nicolaides, Advisor for the President’s Initiative on Regional Climate Action (EMME-CCI) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, highlighted that women can drive decision-making to achieve environmental change. She also underscored that Cyprus looks forward to COP28, which will be hosted in Dubai next year.

According to the press release, Nicolaides commended the UAE as a model in climate change mitigation and the empowerment of women, noting that the country has recognized that the international community must bolster cooperation and develop innovative methods to combat climate change.
