Two sides expected to reply to UN questions on the second day of the Conference on Cyprus

The second day of the Conference on Cyprus continues on Thursday with the issue of security and guarantees and the two sides are expected to give their answers to three questions posed by the UN Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman.

According to CNA sources, the Greek Cypriot negotiating team was working until the early hours at the conference centre, which is hosting the peace talks, to prepare a written document with the Greek Cypriot side’s answers.

The negotiating team is scheduled to meet President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades to discuss the replies before they are presented to Feltman.

During the first day of the conference, Feltman posed three questions which he said he would like the discussion to concentrate on: first how the two sides see the day after a solution, second how the concerns of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the issue of security will be addressed and the third question relates to the mechanism for the implementation of a solution.

The two sides are expected to give their positions by Thursday in writing, which enable discussions, ahead of the arrival of the UNSG on Friday in Crans Montana.

On Thursday the Conference on Cyprus continues from 9.00-11am local time with the discussion on guarantees and between 11.00-1300 discussion will take place on territory, property and governance between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

The Conference on Cyprus, being held under the auspices of the United Nations, started on Wednesday morning at Le Regent Congress Centre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a view to reaching a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
