Threats and actions are not suited to bring a solution, Austrian Ambassador tells CNA

Threats and actions which stand in contradiction to international law and the spirit of good-neighbourly relations are not suited to bringing about a solution, Austrian Ambassador to Nicosia, Dr. Eva Maria Ziegler, has told CNA.

The Ambassador was invited by CNA to express the Austrian position as regards the Turkish actions in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone.

Austria shares the position of the EU Commission and emphasises that differing conceptions should be resolved on the basis of international law and in a spirit of good-neighbourly relations the Ambassador said.

She also stressed that threats and actions which stand in contradiction to these criteria are not suited to bringing about a solution.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks commenced at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana on June 28, but in the early hours of July 7, it was announced that the Conference on Cyprus ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.

Drillship Saipem 12000, commissioned by Italian energy company ENI, was halted last Friday by Turkish warships en route to a location within block 3 of Cyprus’ EEZ.
