There is a unique opportunity for a Cyprus settlement, Tillerson will tell Ankara

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will convey the message to the Turkish political leadership that there is currently a unique opportunity for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, during his visit to Istanbul on July 9-10.

Asked by CNA if Tillserson will raise the Cyprus question during his visit to Turkey and which message he will convey, as negotiations on the Cyprus problem take place in Switzerland, a State Department senior official said that “our broad message to all of the parties is that this is a really unique opportunity for the parties in Cyprus to seek and find a settlement that fulfills the long term goal that everybody has agreed on, the bi-zonal bicommunal federation.”

“Our hope and our message to all the parties is flexibility, creativity and keeping up the Cypriot-led process is the best way to do this. The best way to get a settlement on Cyprus that uncorks a lot of potential for the people of the island and the people of the region,” he noted.

So the Secretary’s message, he added, “will be very much consistent with that. And we will see where we are by the weekend in terms of how things are going on the talks.”

“If you are following this, you know that minute by minute updates are coming out of Switzerland with regard to the talks on Cyprus. So, I am not going to comment where we are now and where we are going to be over the weekend,” the official said.

UN-facilitated peace talks began in Crans-Montana on June 28 to help find a negotiated settlement that would reunify Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
