The US and Cyprus reaffirm their strong partnership

Washington and Nicosia reaffirmed their strong partnership during Thursday’s meeting at the White House between US Vice President Mike Pence and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades,

A readout of the VP’s meeting with Anastasiades said that Pence underscored U.S. support for the resumption of UN-facilitated talks in Geneva and expressed hope that the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders will agree to a settlement that would reunify Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federation to the benefit of all Cypriots.

It further said that the Vice President and President Anastasiades reaffirmed the strong partnership between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus and discussed areas for further cooperation.

The Vice President also expressed gratitude for the Republic of Cyprus contribution to the Global Coalition to counter ISIS and its commitment to support the Middle East peace process.

UN-facilitated peace talks have been underway between President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci since May 2015 with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
