The high and excellent level of relations between Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the mutual belief to strengthen their relations further in all sectors, were asserted by the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, and the President of Egypt, Mr Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during their meeting, today, at the Presidential Palace in Cairo.
The bilateral meeting of the two Presidents took place in the framework of the Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Trilateral Summit Meeting, which commenced in Egypt today.
During their meeting, Presidents Anastasiades and Sisi discussed issues concerning the bilateral relations between the two countries, including sea and air transport, communications, education, as well as search and rescue. The meeting also dealt with issues concerning cooperation in the energy sector, in agriculture, the Cyprus problem, the relations between the European Union and Egypt, migration, the fight against terrorism and regional developments.
It was asserted by both sides that the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt are at an excellent level, with the Cyprus Government expressing, one more time, its determination to support the efforts for a further deepening of the relations between the European Union and Egypt. On his part, President Sisi indicated his Government’s support to the Republic of Cyprus within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
With regard to the energy sector, the developments in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean were discussed along with the next steps in the cooperation of the two countries, with emphasis on the agreement that was signed recently with regard to the sale of natural gas by Cyprus to Egypt, both for domestic consumption as well as for exports.
Also stressed was the will by both sides for further cooperation in the fields of olive cultivation and fish breeding.
At the meeting, President Anastasiades briefed his Egyptian counterpart about the recent developments on the Cyprus problem and thanked him for the support his country provides within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the efforts for a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem.
With regard to migration, President Anastasiades stated the support of Cyprus to the efforts of President Sisi’s Government to limit the illegal flows of migrants from his country to the European Union countries.
The President also said that Cyprus considers favorably a possible European Union-Egypt Declaration on Migration, on the basis of safeguarding the protection of human rights.
