The President of the Republic holds talks on the issue of Territory with the leader of the T/c community

The talks, with primary focus on the issue of Territory, commenced today November 7 in Mont PAlerin, Switzerland, between the President of the Republic and leader of the Greek Cypriot community, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr. Mustafa Akinci, their interlocutors and the support teams of the interlocutors.

The talks on the issue of Territory and outstanding issues are being conducted under the auspices of the United Nations, in the presence of the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide. The talks are taking place at the Le Mirador hotel, in the mountain resort of Mont PAlerin, and will continue until 11 November.

At 9:00 a.m. (Swiss time), today, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, arrived at the site of the talks.

Following, the Secretary-General met and had a photo opportunity with the two leaders. There were also photo opportunities of the UN Secretary-General with the two leaders and Mr. Eide; of the UN Secretary-General and the spouses of the two leaders Ms. Andri Anastasiades and Ms. Meral Akinci; with the UN Secretary-General and the interlocutors of the two communities Messrs. Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami; as well as with the UN Secretary-General, the leaders and the members of the negotiating teams and the advisors of the two communities.

Then the Secretary-General with the two leaders, their negotiating teams and their advisors moved to the room where the talks are being held.

Later on, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made a statement to the press about the commencement of the talks.

In his statement the UN Secretary-General said the following:

“I am pleased to be in Mont PAlerin. I thank the Government of Switzerland for their generosity in hosting us.

I am here to open this week of intensive negotiations between the Greek Cypriot leader, His Excellency, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, His Excellency, Mr. Mustafa Ak?nc?.

The talks will be conducted under the auspices of the United Nations Special Adviser, Mr. Espen Barth Eide, and will concentrate on the chapter of territory as well as all other outstanding issues interdependently.

The two leaders have expressed their hope that this meeting will pave the way for the last phase of the talks in line with their shared commitment to do their utmost in order to reach a settlement within 2016.

I highly commend their Excellencies Mr. Ak?nc? and Mr. Anastasiades for their efforts. Significant progress has been made in this leader-led process over the past eighteen months

At the same time, a number of sensitive and difficult issues still remain. I know the two leaders are here with a strong commitment and determination to work towards solving all these issues.

The two leaders have reached a critical juncture in their talks. I encourage them to make the most of the moment and the momentum. It will be crucial as they tackle the outstanding issues across chapters, during this week in Switzerland and beyond”.
