The Minister of Defence departs for Malta to participate in the Informal Meeting of the EU Defence Ministers

The Minister of Defence, Mr Christoforos Fokaides, departs today, 26 April 2017, for Malta, where tomorrow he will participate in the deliberations of the informal Meeting of the Ministers of Defence of the EU member states.

At the meeting, the progress of the Implementation Plan on Security and Defence will be discussed, as well as the collective efforts to address the serious migration problem in the Central Mediterranean. In this framework, the deliberations of the Meeting will focus on the implementation of PESCO, the ways to increase the operational readiness of the EU Battle Groups and the operations of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in the Central Mediterranean and Libya.

This afternoon, Minister Fokaides with his counterparts will visit the EUNAVFORMED SOPHIA shipwreck, where the Commander of the operation will brief the Ministers on the main activities of the operation and the situation in the Central Mediterranean.
