The EU27 Justice Ministers exchanged views on the future of the Schengen area, during Council teleconference

The Minister of Justice and Public Order Emily Giolites participated today in the teleconference of the Informal Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the EU, the first held under the Portuguese Presidency.

According to a written statement issued by the ministry, the talks focused on “the future of the Schengen area and the reform that needs to be done so that the common travel area, without borders, can adequately meet modern challenges”.

In particular, it is stated the EU27 discussed “new data created by the outbreak of COVID-19 disease on the temporary restriction of unnecessary travel to the EU and the issue of reinstatement of internal border controls as a last resort for a limited time for targeted management of specific serious threats, with simultaneous implementation of alternative compensatory measures “.
