The art of chanting psalms in the byzantine music nominated in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The art of chanting psalms in the byzantine music is nominated to be included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, at the proposal of Cyprus and Greece.

The nomination file will be examined in the fall of 2019.

A statement by the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO said this art is the most important means of communicating the religious worship of the Orthodox Christians around the world and a unique music art.”

The proposal was jointly made by Cyprus and Greece and aims to point the significance of studying and conserving the art of chanting psalms for the benefit of younger generations and to promote it.

So far, Lefkara laces or Lefkaritika were inscribed in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity with Tsiattista (poetic duelling) inscribed in 2011 on the Representative List.
