Talks at Crans Montana on Cyprus enter second week

Negotiations on Cyprus enter a second week on Monday at Crans Montana, in Switzerland.

The first meeting is scheduled at 10-11am on Table 1 on issues of security and guarantees and at 11am-12pm Table 2, on internal matters.

At Table 1 the two communities discuss security in the presence of the guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey and the UK) and the EU as an observer, and at Table 2 the two communities discuss internal matters. Written positions of each side are expected on Monday to be presented on the issue of security and guarantees. Sources do not rule out the same plan followed for Table 2, although the positions there are well known.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that a clear understanding emerged of the essential elements of a package that might lead to a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus. He also expressed his willingness to return to Crans Montana if needed.

The Conference on Cyprus began on Wednesday, to help find a negotiated settlement to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
